I did some posts in a couple G+ Lord of the Rings communities to see what fans’ favourite quotes are. This list includes quotes from all three volumes of Lord of the Rings, as well as The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion.

#1: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
–The Hobbit
#2: “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”
#3: “All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost...
…the old that is strong does not wither,
deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
a light from the shadows shall spring.
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
the crownless again shall be king.”
–The Fellowship of the Ring
#4: “I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are evil.”
–The Return of the King
#5: “In the twilight of autumn it [the last Elven ship] sailed out of Mithlond…
…until the seas of the Bent World fell away beneath it, and the winds of the round sky troubled it no more, and borne upon the high airs above the mists of the world it passed into the Ancient West, and an end was come for the Eldar of story and of song.”
–The Silmarillion
#6: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
-The Fellowship of the Ring
#7: “The deeds we shall do shall be a matter of song until the last days of Arda.”
–The Silmarillion
#8: Éomer: “How shall a man judge what to do in such times?”
Aragorn: “As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man’s part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.”
–The Two Towers
#9: “Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.”
#10: “Long will I tarry ere I start this war over gold.”
–The Hobbit
