Welcome! I’m Benita J. Thompson, and I’m a sucker for retellings—whether of Jane Austen, fairytales, or pretty much any other kind (are there other kinds?). Sweet romance, whether historical or contemporary, is right up my alley. I also have a taste for murder mysteries, especially Regency suspense and the Detection Club. I’m currently working on a Beauty and the Beast reimagining set in Regency England with highwaymen and a dash of magic, and a heroine who struggles with anxiety.
Here are a few (read: “way too many”) random facts about me, in no particular order:
- My favourite colour is lavender, with yellow, pale pink, and baby blue close behind—anything pastel!
- I was homeschooled kindergarten to grade 12, and graduated from Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts.
- I am married with (so far) two precious little boys. We live in small-town Ontario but would love to move west someday (mountainsss, my precious!).
- I love Baroque music, and my favourite composers are Vivaldi and Handel. I play piano and organ, and sing a bit—but never in public. (Excluding the time I volunteered to sing the Laudamus Te duet from Vivaldi’s Gloria for our schola concert in my final year of university, only for the concert be cancelled a week out thanks to ✨ 2020 ✨… and I’m still not over that disappointment. I’ve wanted to sing the Gloria in concert since I was 13.)
- I drink enough water that I might as well be a data centre. (And on that note, I strongly oppose the use of generative AI.)
- Six years of my life were spent obsessed with The Lord of the Rings, and I could’ve told you any random “useless” fact about Middle-earth. Case in point: I made a two-hour fanfilm of The Hobbit at age 15, roping in all my siblings and friends. (Careful, my obsession still lurks beneath. Don’t call it a trilogy in my presence. Or mis-punctuate/capitalise Middle-earth.)
- I sew a lot, even though it tries my patience to the breaking point; mostly only because I love wearing Regency attire and can’t afford to buy authentic costumes so I have to make my own. I share lots of photos on my Instagram @benitajthompsonauthor—photography is another of my creative pursuits!
- 1995 Pride and Prejudice please! (Don’t get me started on *other* adaptations. I’m not joking, seriously do not get me started I will not be able to stop and I’ll get really mad. This is my Roman Empire 😅)
- I published three books at ages 15 and 16 respectively. They were way too influenced by my contemporaneous Tolkien obsession. If you must succumb to morbid curiosity, search them up under the name Benita J. Prins—at your own risk! (One of them is a Tolkien trivia quiz book, which I’m not nearly as embarrassed by.)
- I once ate an entire rack of ribs, and in my second year of university was voted most likely to eat 5 quesadillas in one sitting.
- I have way too much floral clothing, a horrible sweet tooth, a fixation on British vs. American English, and an eternal love affair with the Oxford comma, em dashes (yes I know the keyboard alt code), and semi-colons.
- If you read this far, enjoy a table (did I mention I love organisation?):
